Plight Of Sabah’s Students With Studying Online

Short Story

Just when we thought that in this age and time, our infrastructure should have improved years ago – INTERNET CONNECTION is still one of the issues that has not been addressed well yet especially in rural areas of Malaysia.

And when we were hit with the Covid19 pandemic, students from the rural areas in Malaysia struggled to keep up with their studies online due to unavailability or weak internet connection.

In this campaign, we address the plights of rural students (and teachers) in Sabah that not only struggle with internet connectivity but also limited access to online learning due to old or lack of suitable devices. Most of them are of old models and unable to support the heavy datas. Their plights are not limited – there are many others that are waiting to be discovered.

Meet the siblings, Rechellyna Wivian Rinus (or known as Rachel or Nanak) and Ryverra Wiviani Rinus, both from Kg Bomboi, Keningau, Sabah. Both are also the students of SMK Keningau, Sabah.

Sisters, Rechellyna Wivian Rinus (or known as Rachel or Nanak) and Ryverra Wiviani Rinus.

Due to MCO and the implementation of online learning, to get better connection, they had to walk to the end of their village (Kg Bomboi) where the signal (4G) is the strongest.

Come rain or shine, they have no choice but to do this (every single day throughout the MCO period) to ensure that they do not miss any classes due to recorded attendance. We shudder to imagine children from as young as 7 had to struggle and find ways to get access to the internet just to study.

Siblings studying at Puru Online.

And due to the challenges and limitation, both sisters, together with the help of their uncle (he happened to work at the nearby plantation farms), they cleared a small area in the nearby jungle (abandoned land) and built a wooden makeshift hut, complete with table/bench using plastic sacks as roofs to protect them from rain, sun and dangerous animals that may fell from the tree. After days of setting up, their makeshift hut called “Puru Online” is open for use and this is also shared with the other children in the village.

To study at the hut, they brought along fully charged laptops and portable power banks for their mobile phones. They also have portable cooking stove so they can cook simple meal whenever they are hungry. And when it drizzles, the makeshift hut plastic “roof” will protect them. Otherwise they will have to run back home together with their books and gadgets. The connection is even worst whenever it rains.

To share their plight, they recorded the video (of them setting up the makeshift hut from scratch) and of them studying with the other children in the village and then posted them on Youtube to share their struggle and experience. Little did they realised that the video was shared amongst friends is also viewed by others outside their circle.

And with little luck on their side, few weeks after the sharing, a good Samaritan had gifted them with a laptop and a portable Wifi Modem. However it is insufficient as they also have other siblings and other students in the village that are also in need of such tools to study.

WHAT DO THEY (AND OTHER STUDENTS OF SIMILAR PREDICAMENT) NEED?

After discussing with them/and our Beyond Pitas Volunteer team (some are based in Sabah), we raise this campaign to gather funds to assist the challenged income students with the followings:

  1. Laptop (preferably with MS Office equipped)
  2. Tablets or Smartphones
  3. Wireless Modem
  4. External Hard Disk
  5. Others (zinc roof and fixing work)
  6. Tables, chairs if needed
  7. Revision books

Since we are not sure the total estimates required (depending on how many students we can assist) we hope Malaysians can be generous to chip in. We put on an achievable amount of RM25,000.00 to at least help us kick start. ANY spill over balance received from pledgers/donors or items in kind (as mentioned above) donated from compassionate parties, we endeavor to forward them to deserving students that are truly in need. We will also update the recipients names/locations/with photos.

To date, we have identified students from Membakut and Semporna and will also explore to identify those from Pitas, Kudat, Kiulu, Kota Marudu and Kota Belud.

COLLABORATION WITH BEYOND PITAS

In this campaign, our team (Hanafundme) will also be working closely with a collaboration partner, a team of volunteers, BEYOND PITAS that is currently based in Sabah. Beyond Pitas volunteers consists of passionate individuals from various backgrounds that are driven to address and help out with community issues in Sabah.

They will be our distribution point for all items that needs to be distributed during this challenging time (Covid19 pandemic is still not over yet). They will be on the ground to be our eyes & ears to identify the affected students that needed help with the tools required.

Apart from the internet access issue which we will highlight to the relevant parties from time to time via follow ups or through media (for their further action), we will ensure that those in aid of tools (laptop, wifi modem, tablet) will be provided with, hence raising funds/items in kind for these students will be our main task until our help is no longer required.

WE ALSO WELCOME ITEMS IN KIND APART FROM FUNDS

We also welcome any parties to collaborate and work with us to provide any of the above, either funds or in kind items (preferably based in Sabah to save on logistic cost in order to ship the items, and for safety reasons in case those items gets lost in transit).

Nevertheless, WE URGE THAT THE RELEVANT PARTIES WILL LOOK INTO THIS MATTER URGENTLY (MCMC, STATE & FEDERAL GOVERNMENT) AND SET UP THE MUCH NEEDED INFRASTRUCTURE IN AID OF THE STUDENTS, NOT JUST IN SABAH BUT ALSO IN OTHER RURAL PARTS OF MALAYSIA.

The struggle is REAL. We appreciate all the help we can get to help these students.

Do contact us at hello@hanafundme.com for further details or to arrange sponsorship.

We leave below some photos from some of those that were affected and covered by our volunteers recently.

BM VERSION (SUMMARY):

Walaubagaimanapun, KAMI BERHARAP BAHAWA PIHAK YANG BERWAJIB AKAN MENANGANI PERKARA INI DENGAN KADAR SEGERA (MCMC, KERAJAAN NEGERI & PERSEKUTUAN) DAN MENYEDIAKAN INFRASTRUKTUR YANG DIPERLUKAN UNTUK MEMBANTU PELAJAR, BUKAN SAHAJA DI SABAH TETAPI DI KAWASAN PERKAMPUNGAN YANG LAIN DI MALAYSIA.

Sabah teens build hut in clearing to keep up with Online Learning.

Thank you Malaysia Kini, for covering the campaign story https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/532601.

We still continue to raise for many more students in need in rural areas of Sabah. While the connectivity issue is something that is beyond our capabilities – we can only highlight them in our campaign and hopefully the relevant parties will take notice, our focus now is to get the necessary devices to ensure the students able to access learning online.
